Search Engine Marketing

In the early nineties when the internet was developing itself to turn into what it is today, search engines were just virtual places where you could find a list of home pages that contained the keywords you were looking for. Features like importance, relevance and fitness of the result, were not taken into account, making a list of, sometimes, just subscribed pages. In fact, that was all that used to be important: when you needed your site to be on these pages' results, all it would take was to fill up an application form and, in a few days (or weeks), your site would be added - or not - depending on the site manager's decision.

Today, seemingly things are more focused and directed - when it comes to the internet - Search Engines mean more than they used to recently. This is so because the internet is being faced not only as entertainment and cultural purposes but also as a highly lucrative place. The biggest companies uphold a different perception towards what it represents and that created a whole culture of acquiring money trough this "interactive world". Today there is none visionary and ambitious (in a good sense) company that does not own a website to promote products and services.

According to the whole idea of using internet for spellbinding ideas, churning products, services and else, the Search Engines started to develop better ranking procedures for their results through meeting "costumers" needs. Today, when you search something on these pages, the results are very well sorted by some requisites, and that is where the "Marketing" comes in. To be better ranked than other websites, webmasters and web developers started to market out their websites on these Search Engines. This includes the optimization of a site, the submission to directories, the use of 'pay-per-click' search tools and keyword related advertising.

Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN Search and other sites pass the idea or being reliable. There is a general idea that the first related results are better than the others listed bellow, in the following. That is the main idea of how to improve traffic and promote your website trough search engines.
